 Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are stinging insects that feed on people's blood while they sleep. They have a brownish colour and are the size of an apple seed (four to seven millimetres). They like to hide inside mattresses during the day, which is why it is important to protect not only the mattress, but also the box spring (this is where most infestations are found).

According to a recent survey, 40,000 households on the island of Montreal, or 2.7%, were infested with bed bugs. In New York, 1 in 15 households have bed bug problems. Bed bugs are spread across all major cities of the world. It’s better to be proactive.

Life cycle

Their eggs are white, one millimetre long and almost impossible to see on most surfaces. Females lay about 200 eggs over the course of their lives, at a rate of two to four eggs a day.  They lay their eggs in crevices and cracks, behind woodwork, or in any other well-hidden location. Eggs take 6 to 17 days to hatch.

They can survive up to 18 months without feeding themselves; more mature specimens can survive even longer.
If they are not exterminated, bed bugs will reproduce and spread quickly. When they exist in large numbers, bed bug infestations can become a nuisance. An infestation of bed bugs can have serious health consequences.

The main symptoms are:
red blisters similar to those caused by mosquito bites;
itching that can sometimes be strong and very unpleasant
. The intensity of itching is stronger early in the morning but decreases as the day progresses.

Bed bug bites can take up to 14 days to become visible. They are most often found on the face, neck, arms, legs, and chest, but can be inflicted anywhere on the body.
